Everard Loring Bates was born December 10, 1887, to Charles Fremont Bates and Persia Elizabeth Moody Bates in Moro, Maine. He was married to Winnifred Gertrude Cunningham and was the father of Margaret Louise, Edith Nerrienne, and Eloise Bates. He worked as a farmer and woodsman all of his life. He loved fishing and hunting and was a faithful fan of the Boston Red Sox. He was a lifelong Republican and a member of the Patten Methodist Church. He was a popular member of his community, known far and wide for his outrageous sense of humor.
