On March 27, 2013, heaven received a special angel. Betty Vimpany Jenkins, at 86, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family at St. Peter's Hospital.
Betty was born May 25, 1926, in Helena. Betty was the second eldest child to mother, Lela Merle Vimpany, and father, Richard Vimpany. Betty had an older sister, Florence Merle Suetter (Billie), and a younger brother, Rusty Vimpany. She spent her early years living with her parents in the Helena Valley and later her family moved to Toston. Betty graduated from Broadwater County High in Townsend in 1944.
Betty attended nurses training at Carroll College for a short time but found her true passion was teaching. She then pursued her degree in education at the University of Montana-Western, where she received her Bachelor of Education degree, and later completed her master's degree through summer school. Her teaching career began in Crow Creek Valley and continued on for 15 years in Clancy and 22 years at Boulder Elementary for a total of 42 years before retiring from Boulder Elementary School in 1989. She then continued to substitute teach for 10 more years.
Betty was married to Glen William Jenkins in 1947 and they were blessed with three daughters, Lynda, Sandy and Stacy. After 25 years of marriage, Betty and Glen divorced. She then spent most of her time devoted to her children and then grandchildren.
In her younger years, Betty and her family spent many summers in Seldovia and Homer, Alaska, where she worked in an air taxi office and a cannery processing king crab. Later she enjoyed summer trips with friends and family. After retirement, she enjoyed her grandchildren's functions and activities. Betty was often found in the bleachers cheering on the Boulder Panthers. She was a well-known teacher and friend but best known to all as Grandma Betty.
Betty was a devoted, mother and grandmother and she loved like she lived — generous, unassuming and with her whole heart. Never one to complain, she carried the burden of the world on her shoulders with a smile on her face. Those who were honored to know and love her knew she was one of a kind. She was a tower of strength to those who depended on her, and she had compassion for animals and people alike. She took joy and pleasure in the simple things in life.
She is survived by her beloved children, Linda (Clint) Riis, Sandra (Seth) Zupanik and Stacy (Chris) Bullock; brother, Rusty (Vonnie) Vimpany, sister-in-law Mary Molitor; grandchildren Vicki, Cookie, Jenine, Jennifer, David, Patricia, Lisa, Jena, Brad, Kylie and Brian; and numerous great-grandchildren who each had his or her own special place in Grandma's heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister.
Her loss will be felt deeply, as she was an incredible and loving person and brought friendship and comfort to those around her.
Honorary pallbearers were David Bradley, Brad Bullock, Brian Bullock, Jeremy Jordan, John Behneken, Jason Waldner, John Feliciano and Kyle Simons.
A memorial service was held at the Boulder Elementary School gymnasium at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30. Immediately following the service, interment of her ashes took place at the Boulder Cemetery with a reception following at St. Catherine's Parish Center.
