Lena was a homemaker. Despite deeply strained finances she did, indeed, make a home; not only for her husband and children but also for some of her grandchildren, whom they raised.
She was not prone to panic. In their later years Charlie and Lena spent summers in Algonac, Michigan right on the edge of Lake St. Clair. Water critters were a common sight. One day, while they walked in the backyard, Lena's 5-year old granddaughter saw a big turtle near the water's edge and began to run toward it. Lena called to her, "Cherie, come here. I want to show you something." The little girl turned and ran to her mémé who picked up a hefty broken branch from the ground and said, "Watch." She nudged at the turtle, who whipped around, snapped at the end of the branch and held on. "Wait for me next time, Cherie" was all she said. That little girl, who grew up with all her fingers and toes intact, remembers.
