Gruys, John W. John W. Gruys passed away on December 13, 2004 after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Sallie Elizabeth Gwaltney Gruys; his three children, John Robert, Martha Eilene and David E.; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister.

He particularly loved his daughter-in-law Joellyn Stark Gruys who is more than a daughter and sister to all of us. John proudly served in World War II during the invasion of Leyte Gulf and Luzon in the Philippines. Following the War he remained behind, working as a railroad conductor for the Army, providing humanitarian aid to China through the Korean corridor.

Upon his return to Salt Lake City, he resumed his career with the Rio Grande Railroad and worked until his retirement in 1981. In celebration of John's lifetime commitment and loyalty to family and friends, graveside services will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S., Sandy, on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. It was "Pappa" John's desire that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one's local hospice, Roaring Fork Hospice, P.O. Box 1970, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602 or Hospice of Salt Lake City. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune on 12/17/2004.
