He was one of 5 children of Jacob George and Mary Ann Reed. While young (age 18-19), he served as a private for the Union Army in the Civil War. His service was with Company E of Col John C. Lininger's Militia Infantry Battalion and Company C of the 183rd PA Volunteers Regiment. He enlisted Oct 22, 1863 and mustered in Nov 12, 1863 (in Philadelphia PA). He was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on May 12, 1984 and mustered out June 30, 1864 after recovering in a Philadelphia hospital. After the war, he was a farmer who married and had 4 sons and 4 daughters.
