Duane was born to Leydell Sr., and Helen Smith. He grew up in the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago and was a graduate of Gage Park High School. In 1976 he recieved an apprentice certification in transmission from the Temple School of transmission and a special achievement award from the late Mayor Richard M. Daley Sr. His final educational endeavors were pursued at Malcolm X. College, where he studied Child Develpoment.

I was very fortunate to of known Duane thru his work as Security at the Miles Square Facility in Chicago. He would often come into my office and just make me laugh cause he was one for stories, some exagerated but very fun to listen to. He was a good man with a good heart and he is definatley missed. I really can't say anything negative about him cause he was one of a kind. Since his departure from Miles Square things never seemed the same any longer.

He was the father of Duane and Clinton; and of three daughters, Tatanisha, Cierra and Tesla; twelve grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. You are missed Duane, now its time to not stress about life and just rest in your transition. Much love...
