Two-Car Collision Kills S.L. Man; Injuries Claim Youth

Charles Edward Platt, 46 of 1764 2nd East, Salt Lake City...

...Charles Edward Platt, 46, 1764 S. 2nd East, father of Salt Lake Police Officer James W. Platt, died of injuries sustainedin a collision at State Street.

Mr. Platt's car was involved in a collision at State St. and Westminster Ave. (1903 South) shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. He was pronounced dead at 9 (unreadable) p.m. by physicians at Salt Lake General Hospital.

He suffered head injuries and a crushed chest, according to reports.

Investigating police officers Robert D. Braman and James Jensen said the victim was northbound on State St. when his small foreign-made automobile apparently collided with the rear end of another northbound auto which had stopped for a red semaphore.

After the impact the two autos continued down the highway for 45 feet, the officers said.

Reports identified the driver of the second auto involved as Kathryn Gowans, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gowans, 213 E. 27th South.

Charles Edward Platt was born Nov. 22, 1911, in Stockton, Tooele County. He was a son of William and Hannah May McFarlane Platt.

He moved to Salt Lake City with his parents while a young boy and attended Salt Lake public schools. Since 1942 he had been employed by Pacific Greyhound as a driver.

On April 27, 1931, he married Nina Marie Parry in Farmington. They were later divorced.

Survivors include his mother, Salt Lake City; sons and daughters, James Platt, Mrs. James (Carol) Burrell, Norman, Norma and Lynette Platt, all of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Max (Gayle) Osborne, Provo; three brothers and one sister, William Platt, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Cecil J. Platt, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Frank (Rita) Barrett, Holladay.

Funeral arrangements will be announced from 124 S. 4th East.
