Arthur was born in Matane, Québec, the third of eight children, and shared his birthday with his mother, Alma. The family immigrated in late 1901 or early 1902 to Fall River, Massachusetts, where his father Tiburce set up a grocery store. He would learn the trade from his father, and became a meat cutter, first for the store, and later for the A&P near the corner of Plymouth Ave & Pleasant St, and the Stop and Shop off Broadway. He married Marie Freitas in 1928, but was separated by the time of his death due to his increasingly erratic behavior.

At the time of his death, anyone exhibiting "crazy" behavior, whether it was caused by actual mental illness or, in his case, building clots in his brain, was placed in a state hospital. It was at Taunton State Hospital that he died in 1958 of a stroke brought on by the blood clots.
