Robert W. Banks enlisted at the age of 44 as a private at San Francisco, California, February 2, 1862, and was mustered into Company I, 3rd California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco February 6. Private Banks was posted to Utah Territory where he was transferred to Company A, 2nd California Infantry, February 4, 1864. He returned to California and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco February 2, 1865 (Orton, pp. 434, 556, 586). Robert married Eunice (maiden name unknown) at San Francisco where he was for some time a policeman. The couple resided for several years at 533 Commercial Street. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension January 24, 1884, and received application No. 504,532 and certificate No. 397,705. After his death, Eunice filed for a widow's pension January 31 1889, and received application No. 387,993 and certificate No. 287,562.
