A mass of Christian burial for Raymond John Abel, 82, of Louisiana, one of the founders of Abel Oil Co., will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Louisiana. The Rev. Brendan Lawless will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Abel died at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 31, 1990, at the Veteran's Hospital in Columbia. He was born Feb. 1, 1908, in Florissant to Bernard Frederick and Mary Maud StCin Abel. He married Ann E. Davis on Jan. 14, 1942, in Hannibal. She survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Patty Seward, Louisiana; seven sisters, Dorothy Fernandez, Sister Aquiline Marie Abel, Mildred Abel, Agnes Reichert and Freida Abel, all of St. Louis; Gertrude Luebrecht, St. Clement and Teresa Lanterman, Litchfield, Ill.; one brother, Alfred L. Abel, Louisiana; and four granddaughters. Mr. Abel was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a brother. Mr. Abel was one of the founders of the Abel Oil Co. of Louisiana. He retired in 1959. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 370 of Louisiana, and the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He served with the U.S. Infantry in the South Pacific in World War II, and had been awarded a Purple Heart. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
