Dorothy May "Dollie" Hawkins was her maiden name. When Dollie first married in 1916 to Gustav Andrew Schnarr, she listed her mother's maiden name as Mattie Hawkins and her father as unknown. The witnesses to the ceremony were Phillip Mahar & his wife Nancy Scott Mahar.

Dollie was an illegitimate child of Mattie Hawkins. Mattie Hawkins was listed on the 1900 Kansas Census, Marshall Co., Blue Rapids, living with her widowed mother Lydia Hawkins and two brothers. Next door to them was the household of Phillip Mahar and his wife Nancy Scott Mahar.

Dollie was born May 24, 1900 in Blue Rapids, Marshall Co., Kansas. It appears that Phillip and Nancy Mahar took Dollie to raise as their foster daughter. Dollie went with them to Washington state and grew up there. In later marriage records for Dollie, she listed her parents as Phillip Mahar and Nancy Scott Mahar and sometimes used the "Mahar" surname as her maiden name. Phillip and Nancy Mahar are also listed as Dollie's parents on her death certificate. There doesn't appear to be a formal adoption, but Dollie considered this couple to be her parents.
