Kai Gerhard Andersen was born May 31, 1921 Kristiansand, Norway, the son of Gerhard Andersen and Johanne Jonsen.

He came to the United States at the age of two, and his family settled in California. He lived in Los Angeles for many years before coming to Carson City in 1984.

Before his retirement, he was a mechanical engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and served in the US Army during World War II.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Kathleen, in 1984. Survivors included a son, Kenneth Lovelett; two brothers, Gordon and Arnie Andersen; a half-brother, Eric Vettergran; and two sisters, June Kolla and Millie Andersen.
