Mildred Ann (Brandner) Schmitz
February 11, 1925 - March 31, 2013

Millie Brandner Schmitz, 88, of Kansas City, died on Easter morning, March 31, 2013.

Millie defined the role of a caring, nurturing and loving mother. She raised her five daughters to be strong, unique and creative women, and instilled in each of them a sense of justice and compassion for others. When she was 11, Millie took a pair of scissors and cut the word impossible out of the dictionary. She always taught her daughters that impossible did not exist. Though she was part of the Greatest Generation, Millie possessed a somewhat more 1960s attitude about embracing new ideas and taking the path less traveled. Whether it was composing poetry, embracing vegetarianism and herbal medicine long before it was trendy, asking her future husband out on their first date, or road tripping to Florida with a VW bus full of Camp Fire girls, she demonstrated fearlessness and inquisitiveness throughout her life.

Millie was a woman of deep Christian faith and a longtime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She was a stickler for being honest. On days when she thought her daughters needed a mental health day off of school, she would drive them across State Line Road, so she could then honestly inform the school that her daughter missed class because she had gone out of town. How cool was that?

Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph O. Schmitz, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Jody (Jim) Amberg, Marilyn (Jay) Stewart, Martha (Rick) Becker, Jane (Dean) Bruemmer and Margaret (Tony) Rizzo, 21 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, sister-in-law Fran Baker, and brother-in-law Charles Schmitz.

The family wants to thank friends and caregivers Johnnie Johnson, Jenna Miller and her granddaughter-in-law Megan Hatch for the loving care they provided.

Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery South. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Kansas City Hospice 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, Kansas City, Missouri 64114. Condolences may be offered at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com.
