Irene Maurine (Heydt) Ziems
Jan. 26, 1922-Feb. 17, 2013

Irene Maurine (Heydt) Ziems, 91, of Farmington died peacefully in her own home after a long and happy life. She was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Albuquerque, the oldest daughter of Hobart and Irene Heydt.
In 1940 while working at Kirtland Air Force Base, Irene met and married Joseph Ziems, and they were devoted to one another for 63 years.
Irene and Joe moved to Farmington in 1960 and Irene supported Joe in the development of the family business, Ziems Ford. After Joe's death in 2003, she continued to encourage and support Paul and Christine in the management of the business.
Irene was a woman of many talents; she could play the piano, draw, paint and write. She loved provocative ideas and a good conversation. A woman of her time, she funneled her gifts into her home and marriage and found great joy in raising her children and maintaining a comfortable home. Irene adored her children (and her dogs) and they remember her for her charm, wit and lively sense of humor.
Irene leaves behind her sister, Barbara Nelson; brother Richard Heydt; her children, David and wife, Heather, Paul, Kathleen, Christine and three grandsons, Christopher and wife, Mona, Michael and Joseph.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Irene's caregiver, Shaun Rice, who looked after her in her later years.
A funeral service for Irene will be 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Zion Lutheran Church, 7455 Foothills Drive in Farmington with Pastor Gary Thur officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington.
Pallbearers are Christopher Ziems, Michael Ziems, Shaun Rice, Paul Onuska, AJ Henley, Bob Kacpura, Rich Cross and Matt Bircher.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Irene's name to Zion Lutheran Church, 7455 Foothills Drive, Farmington, NM 87402
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all relatives and friends who were so kind and supportive during this time. Your kindness will always be remembered.
Irene's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688.
