Gregory R. Disher, 62, of 717 Minnesota Ave., Stevens Point, died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack Saturday, May 25, 2008, at his cottage on Pelican Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert Greatorex and the Rev. Al Jakubowski will officiate. Burial will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery with military honors. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his name for the American Cancer Society and the local Big Bothers/Big Sisters organization.

Greg was born March 18, 1946, in Stevens Point, the son of the late Raymond and Wanda (Rzentkowski) Disher. He graduated from St. Peter's grade school and was a 1964 graduate of Pacelli High School. He earned his Business Administration degree from Lakeland College. He began his career at the Stevens Point Water & Sewage Department in 1966 as the distribution superintendent. He was named the department's administrator in 1988 and retired on Jan. 1, 2004.

Greg served his country in the U.S. Navy from November 1965 until April 1976. On April 10, 1976, he enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, as a Sergeant First Class/E7. Greg continued his service for 33 years and retired as Lieutenant Colonel on April 29, 1998. He served with distinction throughout his military career. LTC Disher's military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal 2d Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal 3d Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon with Numeral 2, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Wisconsin National Guard Service Ribbon 2d award, and the Wisconsin National Guard Emergency Service Ribbon.

Greg was active in the Isaac Walton League and the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization.

He married Gail Stein on June 17, 1988 in Plover.

Greg is survived by his wife, Gail; his daughter, Amy Disher, Pelican Lake; his step-daughter, Kim (Scott) Dennis, Appleton; two granddaughters, Hannah and Natalie Dennis; two sisters, Donna (Ralph) Olsen, Stevens Point, Debbie (Clifford) Pflugradt, Green Bay; two brothers, Raymond (Star) Disher and Michael (Debbie) Disher, both of Stevens Point.
