COL Purcell, a former resident of Columbus, Georgia, was the highest ranking US Army officer held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. The helicopter in which he was riding was shot down Feb. 8, 1968, in Quang Tri City, Vietnam; he was released 27 Mar 1973 from prison.

Son of Benjamin H. and Hattie Oliver Purcell.

The funeral with full military honors held Saturday, 6 Apr 2013 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Clarksville; Rev. Jack Hancox, retired Army Chaplain Dan Payne and the Rev. Furman Lewis officiated.

Survivors include his wife, Anne, their three daughters, Debbie, Sherri and Joy and two sons, David and Clifford, a brother, Vernon and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
