Son of Thomas Hendry (1721-1780) and Ann Miller (b. 1724)

m. 1775 Jane Mills (1758-1841)

2 Children: Thomas (1776-1853) & Jane (b. 1778)

This gravestone in North Kortright Presbyterian Church Cemetery, is a memorial to John Hendry, father of Thomas Hendry, whose gravestone is next to his. There is also a memorial gravestone to John Hendry in Harpersfield Rural Cemetery. Find A Grave Memorial# 111449652

John Hendry was taken prisoner at Harpersfield on April 8, 1780 when his two older brothers (Thomas and James) were killed. He died later in prison in Quebec. Since he died in a prison ship, it is most likely that he is not buried in North Kortright Presbyterian Church Cemetery nor Rural Harpersfield Cemetery but was buried (thrown overboard?)in Quebec.

He was apparently a carpenter. He left a son and infant daughter. The daughter died in the Schohaire forts during the war. John's wife was Jane Mills. After the war, she married a John McPherson, a Scot, officer of the British Army that stayed in America after the war. John left Jane three lots in Harpersfield. One was given to their son Thomas, one was sold to provide funds for her wedding dress when she remarried. She and John McPherson lived on and farmed the third. Some of the sons of this Thomas Hendry dropped the "D" from the name Hendry. One branch of this family migrated to Louisiana after the Civil War.
