Frank A. Phillips, well-known student of mineralogy, at 89

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – Frank A. Phillips, 89, died yesterday at Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield. Mr. Phillips was a lifelong borough resident. He retired 24 years ago from Mack Truck Co., formerly of Plainfield, where he worked as a clerk for 32 years in the quality control division. He was a member of the United Auto Workers union. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War I. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, South Plainfield, and a former member of the Holy Name Society. He was a former member of the South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department and the oldest living member of the South Plainfield Exempt Firemen's Association, of which he was a life member. He was also a member of the N.J. Firemen's Association and the N.J. Exempt Firemen's Association. With his wife, Eva Labno Phillips, he was a student of mineralogy and had become known as having one of the largest collections of mineral specimens in the area. Various local groups toured his home to view his "mini-museum." Some of his specimens are now located at the Gregory Museum, Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y., while others are located at other museums nationwide. He was a member of the Franklin Mineral Club of Sussex County and the Rutgers Mineral Club of New Brunswick. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens Club, South Plainfield, and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He was also a former member of the American Legion Chaumont Post 243, South Plainfield. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Margaret Alles of South Plainfield; two sons, Bernard of Norwood, Mass., and F. James of Woodbridge; two brothers, Stanley of South Plainfield and Adolph of North Plainfield; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from McCriskin Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, South Plainfield. Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
