He served in the U.S.Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He spent his career in Kansas law enforcement starting at the Manhattan Police Department in April 1942 and rising to the rank of lieutenant. He served in the Riley County Sheriff's Department as deputy and in the Ford County Sheriff's Office as a deputy and undersheriff. He owned and operated Professional Services, a uniformed security company, and Watchgard Alarm Co. both of Dodge City from 1964-1978. He was appointed baliff of Ford County District Court in 1975, retiring in Sept. 1999. He was a certified firearms instructor, a past member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and a licensed private detective.
