Thomas Yelich was born in Ironwood, Michigan on August 1, 1914, the son of Thomas and Anna (Mesich) Yelich. He received his B.Ed. degree from Superior State College and his master's degree from the University of Iowa. He also attended Ironwood Junior College and the University of Washington. He starred in basketball and football at UW-Superior from 1935-1937. He was an-State guard in football in 1937 and was captain of the team. He was inducted into the UW-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame.

During his long coaching career, Mr. Yelich coached basketball in Osceola and Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and was a football line coach in Wausau's glory years under Coach Win Brockmeyer and also coached hockey. He was also a long-time basketball and football official for more than 30 years and held memberships in various teaching and coaching associations.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Yelich taught U.S. History at Wausau Senior High School. Mr. Yelich was married to Juel C. Nolan. Together they raised three sons.

The 1958 Wahiscan listed his personal hobbies as fishing and golf.

Thomas Yelich died on April 13, 2005. He is buried in Restlawn Memorial Park in Wausau, WI.
