Edwin served as a pilot in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an instructor in the B-24 training program in Smyrna Tenn. Following the war, Edwin received a masters degree from the University of Kentucky. and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago. In 1950 Edwin joined the faculty of NC State Univ. He was promoted to the head of the Dept. of Economics.
Edwin was appointed to several commissions by presidents of the United States, including President Eisenhower, President Kennedy, President Johnson, President Nixon, and President Carter.
He became the first Chancellor of the University of Maryland at College Park. Subsequently, he was appointed President of the University of Arkansas, and later President of the University of Houston System. He served on the board of directors of Houston Industries and of numerous nonprofit corporations.
