James attended Arizona State College at Tempe two years, 1939-1941, and he attended one year at the University of Arizona, 1941-1942. He enlisted in the Air Force on 10 Apr. 1942. He was pilot and instructor, training and serving at Kelly AFB, Texas, Hicks Field, Ft. Worth, Moore Field, Mission, Texas, and Majors Field, Greenville, Texas and at Cutter Field, Arizona, near Globe.

James was killed 23 July 1943 at Cutter Field, Arizona, where through special permit he came to visit his father. On take-off his plane stalled in flight and crashed back to earth in flames.

James and Klema had no children.
