Owen is the devoted son of Larry and Annie McElroy, beloved brother of James (b. 1891 - d. 1920), Ellen "Nellie" (b. 1893 - d. 1973; married Bill Marrion) and John "Johnny" (b. 1895 - d. 1925).

Owen was born in Manhattan when the family was residing at 500 West 33rd Street. Two years later, in June of 1900, his Uncle James had been residing with them. Uncle James was the third oldest brother, preceded by Owen's dad Larry, the oldest and then John. The two youngest brothers were Patrick and Michael. There's a six (6) year age difference between Larry and his brother James. James would eventually return home to Ballybay, County Monaghan. A young 17 year old Mamie Owens was already with the family as a servant. Owen's brother James was 10, Nellie 7 and John was age 5. Father Larry is reported as age 35 and mom Annie as age 40.

In April of 1910, eleven (11) year-old Owen was with his family at 455 West 33rd Street in Manhattan. Both parents are reported as being age 55, brother James as 19, sister Ellen (recorded as Helen) as 17 and brother John as age 14. Also recorded as a daughter of Larry's and Annie's is Tessie being age 14. Tessie is actually Teresa McElroy, daughter of Frank and Emily (nee Burns) McElroy who had passed away in 1907 and 1906, respectively. They had resided "around the corner" at 439 West 32nd Street. She is the younger sister of Hugh John, John, Mary, and Lawrence (aka "Nephew Larry"). She's the older sister of Francis "Frank" Joseph and Emily T. (Delaney). Refer to memorial no. 109944421 for further information on Teresa, where her name is spelt as "Theresa", i.e., her memorial is as "Theresa ‘Frank & Emily's' McElroy".

By this same time in early spring of 1910, Teresa's siblings John, Lawrence "Nephew Larry", Frank and Emily were living with Uncle Larry and Aunt Teresa at 413 West 40th Street. Uncle Larry and Aunt Teresa played a most significant parenting role throughout all of their lives. Incidentally, it was Aunt Teresa that Mary Ellen Haskins lived with at 320 West 40th Street when she emigrated from Ireland in May of 1905. Mary Ellen "May" would eventually marry Owen's brother Johnny in September 1919 after the tragic passing of her first husband Francis Joseph Cullen in November of 1918 (our paternal grandfather). Larry's and Annie's children, i.a., Johnny, are first cousins of our mom Anna Janette McElroy Cullen.

Owen started out his career as a steamfitter helper. He worked for the New York Central Rail Road Company at Grand Central.

I have scant records on Owen's short life. Pictured within this memorial is his World War I Registration Card, of September 12th, 1918, for the draft. He was considered tall, of slender build with blue eyes and brown hair.

At that time he was living at 580 Hunterspoint Avenue, along with his parents. Around start of January, 1920, his dad Larry was enumerated as being age 62, his mom Anna age 65 and Owen as age 22. Sadly, his brother James would pass on that month from acute bronchopneumonia with influenza as a contributory factor and Owen would be diagnosed as having contracted tuberculosis in six months' time – by the summer of 1920.

A year later, toward the end of January 1921, Owen would come under more active care for his tuberculosis. By this time he had already been suffering from tuberculosis for some six (6) months. His suffering would end when he passed on at 1:00 P.M. on the 5th of March from home. His dad Larry had Fred Simons handle the undertaking services concluding with his March 7th interment at 1st Calvary just a short walking distance from the family home.

Owen's life here on earth ended before his 24th birthday. His death certificate number is 944 (1921) and was issued in Queens, an image is on FHL roll number 2168871. For the record, 1899 is shown on his death certificate as his birth year, which is incorrect. It is unquestionably 1898, as documented not only by the 1900 Census but more significantly the legal recording of his birth certificate no. 26714 in Manhattan.

At the time of his death, his older brother James had already passed on a year earlier on January 25th, 1920.

His mom's woes were further compounded by the loss of her 2-1/2 year old granddaughter, Rita McElroy, James' daughter, on April 19th, 1921, a month and a half after Owen's passing on. Their father, Larry, would pass on a year later on May 18th, 1922. Their brother Johnny would join them in Heaven a few days before All Hallows of 1924.

Such tragedies.

One can only imagine the great loss and suffering their mother and wife Annie must have endured. The vacuum of lost loves – so near and dear. Hopefully, remaining family closed in to be comforting close to her.

May they all be in Heavenly bliss.
