He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Lifelong member of the VFW Cantigny Post #367 and Honor Guard member.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #12014, and Board Trustee of the National Chinese Shar Pei Club of Chicago.
He was employed with the Joliet School District #86 and retired from Farragut School in 1995, where he was known as Mr. Bernie.
Bernard is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Barbara J. (nee King) Hastings; his children, Bernard (Ann) Hastings, Mary Lynn (Richard) Haviland, David (Rose) Hastings, Paul (Donna) Hastings, Steven Davis and Sunshine Davis; grandchildren Paige, Troy, Jacob, Lacey, Miah, Joshua, Jeramy, Dustin, Thomas, Daniel, Rachelle, Jazmine, Sheree and Ryan; and one brother, Larry (Helen) Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Helen (nee Wesolwski) Hastings.
Visitation: Sunday at 2-6 p.m.
Funeral Services: Monday, April 8, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for mass at 10:00 a.m.
Interment: Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
