NEWPORT NEWS -- George T. Abernathy, 77, former mayor of the City of Warwick and former official of Newport News Shipbuilding died Tuesday in his James River Drive home.
In 1943, Abernathy was elected to the Board of Supervisors of what was originally known as Warwick County. He served as chairman of the board from 1944 to 1952, when it was chartered as the City of Warwick. He then served as its mayor until it was consolidated with Newport News in 1957.

He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1972 as the vice president of nuclear service and construction company after 43 years of service.

Born in Giles County, Tenn., he graduated from Massey Military School and received a degree in civil and hydraulic engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1929.

Following his graduation, he joined Newport News Shipbuilding in their hydraulic division. He held positions with the company as supervisor of that division, head of the industrial products division and sales manager.
He held leading positions with the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Riverside Hospital Board of Managers, the Peninsula Boys' Club, the Peninsula Cerebral Palsy Board, the Peninsula Boy Scout Council, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Commission, the Peninsula Arts Association and Radio Free Europe of the Peninsula. He was also on the advisory board of Walter Reed Memorial Hospital.

He was a member of the Society of Naval Architect and Marine Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Engineers Club of the Virginia Peninsula, the Propeller Club of the Port of Newport News, the James River Country Club and the Hampton Roads German Club.
He was also a member of First Presbyterian church where he served as superintendent of the Sunday school and teacher of the Men's Bible Class.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Estelle Kenny Abernathy; a daughter, Mrs. Susan McCreary of Fayetteville, N.C.; a son, George Thomas Abernathy Jr. of Atlanta; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the residence.
