Melanie Auer Barley, 59, of North Vernon, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital from pulmonary complications following a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Christ Episcopal Church in Madison. The Rev. Evelyn Wheeler will officiate. Interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery.

Born February 10, 1954, in Minneapolis, Minn., Melanie was the daughter of the late Verlin and Donna Cleveland Auer. She graduated from Butler University with a BA in History, and attended Indiana University Law School for a year. She married Dr. Thomas Barley on June 26, 1976. He survives.

A homemaker, Melanie enjoyed gardening, cooking and raising rescue dogs. Melanie was an avid reader, having read up to 10,000 books in her life.

In addition to her husband, Melanie is survived by two sisters, Margaret Auer of Nyack, N.Y., and Michelle Barnett of Colorado; two brothers, Ronald Auer of Seattle, Wash., and Randall Auer of Tampa, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Melinda Auer.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Great Dane Research.

Arrangements were made in care of Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon.
