Born as Franz Zastera to Frank Zastera and Josephine Husak in Bohemia. Siblings: Anna (Zeman then Husak), Henrietta, William, Emily (Svihel), Albin, Mary, Josephine, and Arthur.

Arrived in the United States on the ship, Russia, on July 2, 1892, with his mother and sister, Anna. His father arrived a year earlier on January 20, 1890, on the ship, Werra.

Grew up in the Pine City, Minnesota area. Married Eva Blanche Holbrook in Ray, North Dakota on September 23, 1913, and settled in Minot, North Dakota. Children: Lucile (Brey), Frances, Josephine, Arthur, and Kenneth.

Worked in various positions throughout his life for Great Northern Railway in Minot.

Died following a stroke.
