David J. Dunne Jr., age 87, of Somerset, died March 18, 2013 in Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Sweeney) Dunne, RN.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late David J. Dunne Sr. and Mary (Kearns) Dunne, he lived in Shrewsbury, Fall River, Boston, Providence, and Buffalo before moving to Somerset in 1967.

A graduate of BMC Durfee High School, class of 1943, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Boston College in 1951. A US Navy Veteran, he served in the pacific during World War II aboard the USS Mt. Olympus as a Radarman Second Class. While serving on the Mt. Olympus he was in a number of battles including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the battle of Luzon. He earned the Philippine Liberation Area Ribbon (two Bronze Stars), the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon (two Bronze Stars), the American Area Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and an Honorable Discharge.

A Credit Manager, he worked at Foamex (formerly Firestone) in East Providence for 26 years before retiring in 1993. Prior to that he worked at Signode Steel Strapping Co. and Firestone for many years. An active communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Somerset, he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a volunteer with the AIDS Ministry with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River, a member of the First Friday Club at Sacred Heart Church, the prayer group at Holy Name Church, The Medjugorje Messengers , the Marian Community, Betania II of Medway, MA and a 1983 Marian Medal Recipient. Mr. Dunne was a Hospice Outreach Volunteer with the Visiting Nurses Association of Southeastern MA and a member of the Over the Hill Gang.

He is survived by five children; David J. Dunne III and his wife Margaret of Fall River, Carolyn Sager, Louise Dunn and her husband Thomas all of Acton, John Dunne and his wife Paula, Marybeth Rowland and her husband Chris all of Somerset, one sister; Sister Mary Davida Dunne, RSM, of Fall River, fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Paul, Joseph, and Owen Dunne.
