From the Painesville Telegraph, 16 February 1882
Died on Wednesday, the 8th instant, after a very short illness, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Smith, only daughter of the late Colonel Henrick E. Paine, formerly of this place, and one of the pioneer settlers of this county.
Mrs. Smith was born in Parkman, Geauga county, on the 10th day of March, 1813, and was therefore in her 69th year at the time of her death. About 30 years ago she removed with her husband, Jaman Smith, to Monmouth, Illinois, to which place her father's family also removed. Since her husband's death, which occurred several years ago, she resided with her father, and with a daughter's hand tenderly smoothed his dying pillow as he passed away scarce two years ago, at the extreme old age of over four score years and ten. For the past few months, Mrs. Smith has been staying in Lake and adjoining counties, enjoying the society of her early associates and friends, and at the time of her death was at her uncle's, Franklin Paine, residing at this place. One week before her death she was attacked with congestive chills, but she was not considered dangerously ill until so late that but that few of her friends could be called to her bedside. In accordance with the general desire of her relatives her body was taken to Monmouth to be laid besides the remains of her husband and parents.
