Civil War Union Army officer. A bookkeeper when he enlisted, he served as a Major with the 2nd Mass. Heavy Artillery. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Antietam, but recovered enough to continue to serve until the end of the war. Promoted to Lt. Colonel, he was breveted Colonel U.S. Volunteers, October 13, 1865. He also served with the 35th Mass. Infantry and 1st Mass. Heavy Artillery. Husband of (1st) Sarah Elizabeth Crosby, and (2nd) Mary Elizabeth Andrews. He was the son of Henry Kemble and Sally Cook Oliver.
