Claus Johnson was born in Rikstorp village, Bringetofta parish, Jonkopings Lan, Sweden. His parents were Johan Johanson, born January 22, 1813, and his second wife, Johanna (Olafson)Johanson.
Claus was married December 14, 1886, to Emma Sophia Swanson, the daughter of Swan Swanson and Karin (Sell) Swanson. They had seven children, all born on the farm in Riverside township, Clay County, South Dakota, that he purchased in 1875. He farmed that same farm until age forced him to retire. His daughter Agnes and her husband, Fred Seger, farmed on that farm after Claus retired.
Their children were: Oscar Franklin, Agnes Emelia, Lillie Othelia, Laura Cecilia, Eric William, Anna Sophia, and Clara Mathilda.
