Aline House West BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Aline House West, 89, passed away peacefully at Rittenhouse Senior Living in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday, April 6, 2013. Born in Reform, Ala., to Bessie and Gilmore House, Aline spent her childhood in Tuscaloosa, graduating with honors from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1939. Following graduation, she quickly became active in supporting the World World II war effort, serving as the youngest member of the War Price and Rationing Board in her district. On Oct.10, 1941, she married Vade West of Tuscaloosa in Columbus, Miss. After Vade left for the war in December 1941, Aline continued her work with the tire rationing panel of the rationing board for the next five years. When Vade returned from the war, they took up residence in Tuscaloosa, where they owned and operated several businesses over the next 30 years. In 1963, Aline and Vade opened the AVIS Rent-A-Car in Tuscaloosa, where they worked together until the late 1970s. After selling their business, Aline worked for Phifer Wire, Inc., until her retirement in the mid-1990s. Aline was an energetic and loyal member of Indian Lake Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa and was involved in many activities, including The Women's Society and the Young at Heart social group. She enjoyed studying the Bible and had an extensive library of biblical and religious literature. Her greatest joy was teaching The Faith Sunday School Class. Each Sunday school lesson she prepared was beautifully recorded in her journals, a special treasure for her family. Aline was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, cheerfulness, and grace, bringing joy to all of her family and friends. She deeply cherished her relationships. On Mother's Day 2004, Aline's son, Jeff, presented his mother with the book, Why A Son Needs A Mom, inscribed with the following message: I thought this book might be a small way of telling you how much I love you and how much you've taught me. The lessons I've learned from you are part of my life every day-loving unconditionally, speaking well of others and family loyalty. I'm so thankful we've had so many good times together-traveling or around your kitchen table. I'm thankful your love of laughter has allowed us to all get through rough times and relish the good times-you inspire me. These words written by Jeff reflect the feelings of all of her children. Aline was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Gladys Kersh and Marjorie House; brothers, Harvard Gresham H.G., Orman, and Robert Bob; husband, Vade; and son, Jeffrey West Sr. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Diane and William Lowell of Lubbock, Texas, Brenda and Jerry Pate of Indian Springs, Ala., and Angela and David Lee of Decatur, Ala.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Blakemore Blake Lowell of McKinney, Texas, Randolph Randy Pate of Arlington, Va., Ashley Garrett and husband Adam of Hoover, Ala., Lauren Lee and Justin Lee of Decatur, Ala., and Jeffrey West Jr. of Dallas, Texas; great-granddaughter, Emelia Garrett of Hoover, Ala.; and dear friend and caregiver, Susan Ross. Visitation will be held today, April 10, 2013, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Memory Hills Chapel in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The funeral service will begin after visitation at 2 p.m. and burial will follow in Memory Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Aline's memory be made to the Indian Lake Baptist Church Building Fund, 3815 Watermelon Road, Northport, AL 35473.
