Gates Beard, son of Horace and Amanda Beard was born in Brome county, Province of Quebec, Canada August 12, 1860. At an early age he, with his parents, moved to Illinois and from there to Michigan. When about 12 years old he came to Scott township, Steuben county, Indiana, and since that time made his own way. As a young man he spent much of his time in the John Berlien home which compensated largely for the home life of which he had been deprived.

August 12, 1882, he was united in marriage to Louisa L. Rummel. During their early married life they lived one year in Richland township, and later in Williams county, Ohio. Then they came to Scott township where they lived until the wife and mother passed away September 27, 1909. To this union were born four children: Shirley, on the home farm in Scott township; Pearl, now Mrs. Emmet Chard; Earl, who died September 29, 1912; and Alma, now Mrs. Frank Davis of Otsego township.

In 1887 Mr. Beard and his wife made their confession of faith in Christ and united with the Church of Christ at South Scott during the ministry of F. P. Arthur. His membership continued there until the last few years of his life when he transferred his membership to the Metz Christian church.

In June, 1925, he was married to Mrs. Cynthia Snyder and resided with her near Metz until about five weeks ago when she sustained a broken ankle making it necessary for her to be removed from the home for medical treatment. He having suffered a paralytic stroke in January and being confined to bed, was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emmet Chard, where he remained about five weeks until his death March 16, 1936 at the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 4 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two step-daughters, one son, two daughters, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Hemry of York township; Mrs. Carrie Clark of Auburn; and Mrs. Etta Healey of Franklin, New Hampshire, besides a large number of neighbors and friends in the communities where he has lived. He was a good neighbor, a true friend, a wise counsellor and a worthy citizen.

Funeral Services were held at the South Scott church, conducted by S. R. Aldrich assisted by M. O. Johnston. Burial in South Scott cemetery.
