Husband of Nancy Sue Champion. Father of Grant Robert, Matthew Cliff, and Caraline Marie Champion. Brother of Phyllis Jean Beitz. William was the founder of the "Penny Saver" shopping guide in Iowa. He started the Penny Saver in his basement and garage in 1967. This paper is still in existence today and has grown to a circulation of 74,000 in the Cedar Rapids and Marion, Iowa area. He also was the president of the Shopper's Guide to Iowa, a trade organization. In addition he belonged to the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Cause of death: William Dean Champion, along with his wife, three children, and sister were killed in a private plane crash in Hartselle, Alabama, while traveling from Florida to Iowa.
