GLASGOW - Mary Cornelius Wilson, 99, of Glasgow died April 8, 2005, at her home.

The Jackson County native attended Annville Institute and took secretarial training at Eastern State Teachers College. In 1928, she married Cecil C. Wilson, a young lawyer from Livingston County, who preceded her in death, and, in 1932, they established their home in Glasgow, where she continued to live until her death. She taught women's Sunday school classes for more than 60 years, retiring on her 90th birthday. She was the oldest living member of Glasgow Baptist Church. Her second major civic interest was the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Public Library in Glasgow, on whose board she served for many years. She also served as chairperson for more than 20 years. She was president of the Kentucky Library Trustees Association and served on the White House Commission on Libraries. She was a 70-year member of the Glasgow Garden Club, where she became interested in ecology and conservation. She served on the first board of directors of the Kentucky Nature Conservancy and traveled all over the state, examining and assessing potential gifts of primitive land to the conservancy. She remained physically active until very recently and led the exercise class at the senior citizens center until past age 90. The Wilsons traveled extensively to ancient parts of the world. She returned to China and visited Tibet after her husband's death in 1974. She was preceded in death by a sister, Beula Cornelius Nunn, and six other brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home, with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and on Sunday until time for services at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions in her memory to the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Public Library or a charitable organization of the donor's choice.

Survivors include two daughters, Cecile Wilson Garmon and her husband, Larry D., of Glasgow and Sue Nancy Wilson Herbert of Black Canyon City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Leslie Garmon Sarasin of Vienna, Va., Nancy Anne Herbert Kilgore of Black Canyon City, Mary Lyn Herbert Wallace* of Glasgow and Hiram Jefferson "Jay" Herbert III of Louisville; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Nicole Berry of Lamb and Douglas Wilson Sarasin of Vienna; a nephew, Steven Roberts Nunn of Glasgow; and a niece, Jenny Lou Nunn Penn of Frankfort.
