Christian served as a Sergeant in the 2nd Kentucky Infantry Regiment (Union) during the Civil War. He fought in the battle of Shiloh, and was part of the reinforcements under Gen. Buell who helped Gen. Grant turn the tide in favor of the North. His right leg was shot off in battle and he had to wear a false leg the rest of his life. He eventually received a US War Dept . pension of $30 a mo.
