OLD CLERGYMAN DEAD.

Salem, Mass., Nov. 3. -

Rev. Isaiah C. Carpenter, the oldest clergyman in Salem, died at the Salem hospital this morning.

He was born in Ashford, Conn., April 17, 1811, and has labored as a Baptist divine in the New England states for 41 years.

The Rev. Mr. Carpenter was the son of Jonathan & Elizabeth (Bartlett) Carpenter. He married February 5, 1836 in Pittsford, Vermont to Nancy Cody and they had six children, several of whom died young.

He was educated at the CT Literary and Scientific Institution and first settled at Templeton MA where he was ordained on 8 February 8, 1837, remaining there seven years. He then served the
MA Home Mission Society for three years;
he was at the church in Thompson, CT three years,
Montville for three years,
in Russell MA two years,
Londonderry VT two years,
Newfane VT five years,
Salem NY three years,
and Pittsford VT beginning July 7, 1865 with a salary of $250 and parsonage.

This family genealogical source indicates that he was a Baptist minister with a residence in Leominster MA. They do not list Monkton as a church he pastored but do add several others.

VT Baptist records indicate he pastored the following churches:
LONDONDERRY 1855-56,
PONDVILLE 1857-61,
PITTSFORD CENTER 1859,
PITTSFORD 1865-71,
HARDWICK 1871-75
and MONKTON 1878.
