Grace was born Nov. 17, 1903, in Winfield, a daughter of Cynthia (Hart) and Samuel Compton. Her father was the owner of the Interurban Railway, or ³mule cars,² in Winfield. She graduated from Winfield High School and Southwestern College, eventually becoming a teacher there.

As a concertmistress, she participated in Winfield¹s first performance of Mendelssohn¹s ³EIijah.² Following graduation, Grace was a violin and viola student in Paris and London as a pupil of Spanish violinist Antonio Grose.

In the 1930s, while an orchestra teacher in El Dorado, she met and married C. Fred Colvin. He was a principal and assistant superintendent in the Plainview and Wichita school districts. Colvin Elementary School and Library in Wichita are named after Fred.

After retiring from the Wichita Symphony, Grace continued to teach with the Wichita school district. She also continued to play with the Friends University Orchestra.

Her love of fine antiques led her to become a dealer, and she had many personal shows with her sister, Eva Bayne. Her many hobbies included weaving, reading and traveling the world with family and friends.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Compton, Winfield, and her nieces, Cynthia Compton, Barbara Bayne-Bradburn and Joan Cox.
