Alton L. Boyer, 88, Blandon, a former police chief, died Dec. 29, 2008, at 2:58 a.m. in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since Dec. 18.

He was the husband of Doris E. (Ohlinger) Boyer.

Born in Ontelaunee Township, he was a son of the late S. Alvin and Barbara (Miller) Boyer.

He was police chief for Maidencreek Township for more than 21 years, retiring in 1986. He previously operated Al's Painting in Reading.

A graduate of the Reading Police Academy, he was a member of the Berks County Fraternal Order of Police and served on the local Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, and also as a truant officer and former deputy sheriff for Berks County. He had also been employed as a part-time guard for Berks County Prison.

He is also survived by two daughters, Tina Lee, wife of Vernon McDonald, Holtwood, Lancaster County, and Marilyn Jean Miller, Cumru Township; two sons, Ronald, husband of Nancy Boyer, Hamburg, and Donald, husband of Sue Boyer, in Honduras; and a stepdaughter, Dixie Lee, wife of Tom Krow, Blandon.

Other survivors include 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Barry Boyer, in 2007; five brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Milkins Funeral Home Inc., 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple, with the Rev. Charles E. Fair officiating.
