Obituary from the Ellinger-Kunz Funeral Home:
Gwendolyn Borah
October 8, 1915 - September 18, 2015
Gwendolyn Borah, 99, of Springfield, died on Friday, September 18, 2015 at her residence. Gwen was born on October 8, 1915 the daughter of Thomas James and Maud Elliott Perkins Oliver. She married Alvah Borah on August 24, 1941; he preceded her in death on August 2, 1996. She was proud of being born in Canada in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Before coming to the United States in 1924, she also lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and near Belleville, Ontario. She attended school in Danville, IL and received a bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois State Teachers College in 1937 and a master's degree from Syracuse University in 1941. On August 24, 1941, she was married to Alvah C. Borah of Fairfield, IL where she had taught from 1937-1939. Later she taught in Indiana and Missouri. She taught in Springfield at Feitshans and Springfield High Schools. From 1957-1968, she was a counselor at Jefferson Junior High School, and from 1968 until she retired in 1980, she was a counselor at Southeast High School. From 1966-1971, she was a member of the Springfield Human relations Commission. In 1964-1965, she was president of the Illinois Guidance and Personnel Association. From 1982 on, she was a member of the Springfield Refugee Consortium and served on the board. She tutored in the refugee program and Via Literacy. All her life she had been a member of a Methodist Church. Honoring Gwen's wishes she will be cremated and no services held. When I die, I do not crave noble tombstones at my grave, nor do I ask that people weep when my eyes are closed in sleep. All I want at my life's end are some who'll say “She was my friend".
