Civil War Union Army Surgeon. He was the son of Colonel William Bryan, that officer who recruited the "Olden Legion", a unit that was supposed to be part infantry, part cavalry and part artillery. It was eventually mustered in as th 10th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry (the cavalry and artillery having been discharged). Doctor Bryan was comissioned as the regiment's chief surgeon on September 7, 1861, and was mustered in on October 21, 1861. He served until he was discharged on April 14, 1862.

Dr John Wolfe Bryan was born in 1826 to Mary Ann Roberts 1805-1882 and Dr William Bryan 1806-1874. After graduating with his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Medicine in 1851 he joined his fathers practice in Beverly NJ. In 1854 he married Maria Adele Laguerenne and they raised their 6 children living at Poplar Grove on the river in Beverly until his sudden death on July 20, 1871. Per NJ death records this is correct date of death and June 20 on tombstone is incorrect.
