Music Producer and Promoter. Vice-president of BMG and RCA records. For nearly 30 years Ray Carlton kept his finger on the pulse of popular music as a major record executive, promoter and road manager. He began his career as a road manager and worked his way up to vice President, most recently serving as Vice President of Pop Promotion for RCA records. Along the way Ray worked for Warner Brothers affiliated label Giant Records and Elektra-Asylum Records. One of the first projects which Ray worked with was producing the first record for Iron Butterfly. Over the years he worked with such groups as Ted Nugent and Motley Crue. Prior to his unexpected death Ray produced and promoted material for Britney Spears. He also produced the sound track for the TV show 90210. He retired from the music industry in 2002. Ray Carlton was named Kenneth Raymond Carlton, the son of Margaret Horst Carlton and the late Jerome Carlton. Ray was raised in St. Petersburg, Fla. and graduated in 1973 from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. He returned to Boone at the time of his retirement. In 2006 he and his wife Sharon organized the High Country Cotillion, a social education program, to prepare Watauga County students in life skills. He was married for 31 years to Sharon Anderson Carlton and was the father to his son Sam Carlton of Watauga County.
