SIMMONS, Marjorie Jean (Compton)
March 17, 1920- April 3, 2013

Born in the hamlet of Florida near Wilton, Marjorie spent virtually her whole life in Kingston. Marjorie was through and through a Kingstonian. She loved the City and its history. She was for many years President of the Cataraqui Cemetery Company. She encouraged Kingstonians to think of the cemetery as a lovely place to visit, not just a last resting place. A long-time member of the Kingston Historical Society, she was honoured in 2000 with the KHS Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the preservation and interpretation of local history, as an Historian, Genealogist and Executive Member. She was a co-author of Williamsville Revisited published in 2004 with assistance from KHS. She co-authored The City of Kingston Portrait Collection (2006) (Kingston Mayors). Professionally, she was Administrator for many years of the Institute of Psychotherapy. She was instrumental in creating the Kingston Medical Secretaries Association, and co-founder in 1955 of the Ontario Medical Secretaries Association. Marjorie's greatest interest was family; past, present and future. She joined the Ontario Genealogical Society shortly after its inception in 1961. She was a founding member in 1973 of the Kingston Branch of OGS. She was president of the provincial society 1983-85, chair of Kingston Branch 1976-77 and served both levels in many other positions. Marjorie received an honorary membership in OGS in 1986 and the same recognition that year from Kingston Branch. Long before computers and the internet made family history easier, Marjorie travelled frequently to England in search of her roots, tracked down third- and fourth-cousins, and became good friends with extended relations. She continually encouraged others to find their own roots and was always willing to help beginners. Marjorie was predeceased by her parents John Alfred Compton and Florence Maud Compton (née Godman) and her sister Norma Rose Cutway. She is the dearly loved mother of James Compton Simmons (Carmen) of Sudbury. She took great interest in the lives of her grandchildren Sean Compton Simmons (Kathy Buhler), Graham James Simmons (Laura Newman), Erin Elena Simmons (Peter Dozzi), Shelley Jean Simmons (Paul Haley) and Marc Armas John Simmons (Lisa Mazurkewich). She delighted in visits with her great-grandchildren Nicholas, Ash, Avery, Lorna Jane, Elizabeth, Luka, Lui, Elena and Isabella. She will also be greatly missed by her nephews Steven John Cutway (Nancy) and Bruce Allan Cutway of Kingston. Friends will be received at the James Reid Funeral Home on Sunday, April 7, 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm, with funeral service in the Chapel on Monday, April 8 at 10:00 am, with interment to follow in Cataraqui Cemetery. Those wishing to honour her memory may consider making memorial donations to the Ontario Genealogical Society, Kingston Historical Society, or the Cataraqui Cemetery in lieu of flowers.
