College Basketball Coach. He led the Winston-Salem State University Rams basketball team to 828 victories, making him the fifth winningest basketball coach in NCAA history. His best season was 1966-67, when his team lead by future Knicks star Earl "The Pearl" Monroe finished the season with a 31-1 record and the Division II title. It was also the first time that a historically black college won a national basketball championship. Gaines coached the North Carolina team from 1946 to 1993 with a record of 828-447. In eighteen seasons his team won at least twenty games. As a coach he won eight championships in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1982. In honor of his many accomplishments, the home arena for the Rams is named the C. E. Gaines Center. The university's Hall of Fame is named after Gaines as well.
