William was the son of Lovewell Hurd Baldwin and Sarah Jane Munson of Auburn, New York. He was married in Montclair, New Jersey on 19 October 1881 to Helen R. Sullivan, the daughter of Nahum Sullivan and Sarah Runyon of Montclair. After working for another company for five years, he went to work for the Otis Elevator Company. In 1898 he led the effort to incorporate Otis and became the company's first president. The family lived in Yonkers, New York, and then New York City. William and Helen had five children.
