Wilma Mathilda Ludy, age 89, passed away at Barron Care and Rehab on March 3, 2011 where she went peacefully to be with her Lord in heaven.

Wilma was born on May 20, 1921 to Emil and Albertina Borowski, and grew up with her four brothers and two sisters on a dairy farm on the outskirts of Almena, Wilma attended Turtle Lake High School, graduating with honors, and continued her education at River Falls State Teachers College, where she earned a bachelor degree in teaching.

She married William (Bill) Ludy, a friend since childhood, on June 11, 1944 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Almena. In the years that followed, she lived with her husband and children in Birchwood, Baraboo, and Almena, WI, Osseo, MN and Barron, WI.

Wilma was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church and served her Lord by teaching Sunday School, and was church secretary for many years. Additionally, she was a member of the Barron Federated Music Club, and also served her community as a voting booth volunteer.

Wilma began her teaching career in Roscommon, MI, and then stayed at home to raise seven children before returning to teach in the public schools. She touched many lives as an elementary school teacher (5th grade) for more than 20 years in the Cameron School District. She was loved by her students and experienced great joy in helping them reach their potential.

Following retirement, she continued to serve the community by volunteering to teach English as a second language to Mexican, Vietnamese and Somolian immigrants. She and her husband traveled to Poland twice in connection with his job in cheese production. While there, she taught English to Polish workers as they sat around her kitchen table. Wilma will be especially remembered for her deep love of the Lord, her devotion to her family, friends and her students. Wilmas free-spirited, creative personality, fun-loving zest for life, generosity, love of music, strong work ethic and energetic drive will forever be remembered by those she touched.

Wilma was preceded in death by her four brothers: Harvey (Vicki), Budd (Marie), Jerry (Betty) and Rodney Borowski, and one sister, Ortrude (Alton) Holte. She is survived by her husband Bill, and her seven children: Douglas Ludy of Chapel Hills, NC; Lorrel (Anna) Ludy of Soldotna, AK; Gregory (Cynda) Ludy of West Melbourne, FL; Debera (Allen) Nelson of Rice Lake, WI; Jeanne (Tim) OReilly of Barron, WI; Nancy (Bill) Fessenden of Amherst, WI; and Brian (Wanda) Ludy of Sun Prairie, WI, as well as 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Ardella (Warren) Faue of Ventura, CA; her sister-in-law, June Borowski; her brother and sister-in-law John (Lucille) Ludy of Cumberland, WI, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on March 8th at 1:30 pm at Salem Lutheran Church in Barron. Visitation will be held at the Rausch & Steel Funeral Home in Barron from 4pm-7pm Monday, March 7, 2011, and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Lunch will be served immediately following the funeral service, with burial at St. Matthew Cemetery (east of Almena on Hwy 8), following lunch.

Wilmas family would like to express their deep appreciation to the entire staff at Barron Care and Rehab, Dr. Nagler and the Barron Hospital for their gentle, loving support. Also, special thanks to Pastor Ronald Mueller. God bless you all.
