The youngest son of Byron and Henrietta Karrick Kilbourn. John was named after his grandather, John Fitch of Windsor, CT, inventor of the world's first successful steamboat. His grandmother was Lucy Fitch, who had married James Kilbourne, and she was the only daughter of John Fitch. John died of consumption (TB) in 1850.
