She was educated in the Sumter County public schools. She accepted Christ as her Lord and savior and was a faithful member of the Greater Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, where she served diligently until her health failed.
Marie, "Piggie," as she was affectionately called, was a very loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and aunt. She was loved by everyone who knew her.
She lost her husband at a young age and raised her 13 children on her farm that she worked to pay for with the help of her children.
Survivors include three daughters, Ella Bell Boykin of Camden, Marie (Clemon) Felder and Mary McCleese, both of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Charles (Gloria) Hunter of Patterson, N.J., and Mack (Irene) Hunter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson whom she raised, Anthony (Sandra) Hunter of Camden; two sisters, Mamie Pollard of Camden and Bernice Dinkins of Rembert; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hunter of Borden; a son-in-law, Louis Grant of Brooklyn, N.J.; a special niece, Ida (Sue) Clea of Rembert; 29 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by six sons, Harrison, Robert, Wyatt, Henry, J.C., and Joseph Hunter; one daughter, Carolyn Grant; three sisters; two brothers; and a great-granddaughter, Katrice Gardner.
Funeral services: Greater Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Miller Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Hodge, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Mary Harvin and Minister John W. Lee.
Burial: Mt. Pisgah Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Rembert.
