GAS LEAK ACCIDENT KILLS TWO

ROCHELLE - Catastrophe struck for the second time in 10 years Thursday at the Maplehurst farm on U.S. 64, one mile east of U.S. 51.

Roger Schumacher, 28, Lindenwood, and Keith Furman, 34, rural Rochelle, were killed Thursday, and two Lindenwood firemen were overcome by propane gas fumes in a pit on the farm. Fire Chief Ben Reints, Jr., and Fireman Fred Jaeger were overcome in a futile attempt to save the two men after being summoned at 4:15 p.m.

The firemen were released Thursday night after treatment at Rochelle Hospital.

The farm owned by Leonard D. Carmichael was the scene of another accident in November, 1960 where two brothers died after falling into an open corn crib.

Melvin Messer, Rochelle, Ogle County sheriff's deputy, said that Furman died in an apparent attempt to rescue Schumacher, who had gone into the 6 foot deep pit to repair a faulty motor. He said that Furman had a rope tied around his waist when his body was recovered.

C. A. (Red) Berringer, Rochelle, was with the two men at the time of the accident and told authorities he was unable to pull Furman back to the surface.

Robert Stouffer, rural Rochelle, another employee of the Carmichael farm and father of the two boys who died in 1960, said Schumacher and Furman were working on a pump used for heating cattle barns.

The bodies of the two men were taken to Rochelle in an Unger Funeral Home, where funeral arrangements were made.

Schumacher is survived by his widow, Sandra; two daughters, Colette and Jodi at home; his mother, Mrs. Hazel Schumacher, Rochelle, a brother, Richard, Santa Ana, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. William Hubbard, Kings, and Mrs. Glenn Dunahoo, Lindenwood.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lindenwood Union Church. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Furman, a board member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau, is survived by his widow, Alice; three sons, Keven, Todd and Gregg, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Furman, Davis Junction; four brothers, Curtis and Loren, both of Rochelle, Wayne, Greencastle, Ind., and Wendell, Davis Junction and four sisters, Mrs. Wayne Friestand, Mrs. Kay Hansen and Mrs. Norm Gittleson, all of Rochelle, and Mrs. Wayne Hardy, Lee.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rochelle. Burial will be in Trinity Memory Gardens. There will be no visitation.
