From a daughter of Alford's nephew, I directly learned that Alford died in his youth of pneumonia after saving a family whose wagon had capsized in the Nolichucky river. He was a favorite of his much older brother William, my great grandfather. William named his first son after this boy. That man did the same. And so did my father. Alfred Allen, great grand nephew of Alford Allen.
